All students at Sandhill Child Development Center attend Del Rio Academy, an accredited private/not for profit school located on the Sandhill campus. For many of the students, their academic path has been a challenge and they need individualized support and strategies to overcome difficulties that have limited their academic success in the past. Del Rio Academy offers a unique combination of experiential learning, traditional classroom instruction, and cutting-edge technologies to increase academic motivation and enhance the learning process.
In order to address the very diverse educational needs of our students, Del Rio Academy uses the nationally recognized K-12 curriculum. This has provided a new level of flexibility and individualization to our school environment. Each student is able to work at his or her level, and any special learning needs of each student can be addressed. While primarily an online learning program, teachers and teacher’s aides work closely with the student to supplement the learning process and provide direct instruction when needed.
Throughout the day prescribed neurobiological and relational interventions from the individual residents’ treatment plans are incorporated to ensure continuity of the Sandhill treatment philosophy. All teachers and teacher’s aides are part of the treatment team, and the Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics informs the academic environment as well. Maintaining a well-regulated classroom promotes learning-readiness as well as the ability to attend and absorb new information.
In addition to the core curriculum, students participate in a variety of electives that are specifically designed to fit with a child’s treatment plan and be consistent with the Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics. Some examples are organic gardening, clay work, arts and crafts, drumming, physical education, and music appreciation.
Often students come to us with a history of participation in special education programs and may have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) in place in the home community. We work collaboratively with the family and the home district to ensure that the IEP goal’s are addressed and can participate telephonically in a student’s IEP meetings.
